Barista is generally understood as the people who make and serve coffee behind the counter at restaurant, café or coffee shop. However, it is much more than that. A barista is a coffee professional who has the experience and training to serve coffee and espresso-based beverages to customers that based on his/her craftsmanship and quality. It means that a person who does this job has to own a high level of skills in making espresso and different drinks related to coffee, including cappuccino, mocha, Americano, lattes, etc.
Originally, barista is an Italian word, indicating a male or female, working behind the counter and serving both hot drinks (espresso, for example) and cold alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. So, in Italy this is a bartender but making both coffee and alcohol.

There is a World Barista Championship (WBC) held annually by World Coffee Event (WCV), aiming to promote and honor the barista profession and engage the development of coffee making. Each year, a champion will win the preventatives from more than 50 countries around the world by making 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos, and 4 original signature drinks to exacting standards in a 15-minute performance set to music.
To sum up, barista is the one who makes coffee recipes at art-like levels. This is a borrowing word from Italian. However, a barista today has been widely used as an assurance on highest level of coffee brewers within a coffee shop. He or she, of course, must be able to make excellent coffee cups and recipes and maintain highest quality for every single cup of coffees they serve.
